I dreamt of an arid landscape where the sun had no rest. The mountains rose jagged in the distance, their defiant faces lurching from the gut of the earth to meet a glaring canopy of emptiness above. I stood grimacing with them against the wind and the dust that had been carried with it. Around us the planet was smoldering, its skin split and wrenched open raw, and I could have wept for it had I not lacked the courage. Up ahead a towering spire loomed, and from atop it I could distinguish the sound of a prayer. The crier’s voice wavered delicately atop the wind, beckoning for a heartbeat before drifting out again. I craned my neck to listen but was only met with static. Collapsing, I dug my empty hands into the earth to reclaim it, but it had all turned to ash.
